My focus in this article series is precisely how the Alexander Technique can be used as part of a new strategy, along with other alternative techniques, to achieve the goal of alleviating your Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms and assisting your recovery.

All the techniques I detail work powerfully together, and symbiotically deepen the other techniques overall strength and effects.

Basically, my approach with the Alexander Technique is that I want to extract what I need from the techniques and apply them directly to assist with the musculoskeletal problems that are maintaining patients Fibromyalgia and CFS symptoms.

We all know our own bodies best and your body basically has a preferred method of moving. Put another way there are movements your body likes and movements that it doesn’t like. We all know this subconsciously.


Similarly when you sustain some sort of injury we can feel that there are movements that assist pain and healing and movements that hinder pain and healing.


Many people live there lives with musculoskeletal imbalance and again subconsciously will be setting their heads, necks and bodies in certain positions and alignments that make them feel better or sometimes unknowingly they may be making their situation worse.



The human machine often creates situations where far too much is being demanded of the skeletal muscles. Basically the muscles are working much harder than they need to be overall, and this can create states of permanent tension or injury.


These areas of permanent tension and pain can often become fibrotic and then become the “trigger points” recognized so painfully by Fibromyalgia sufferers once their illness flares up.


When you visit your practitioner, you will be labeled more in line with Fibromyalgia as oppose to Chronic Fatigue and you will be tested via the “trigger point” methodology.

Your primary diagnosis will be Fibromyalgia as oppose to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Let me make one point clear that is an over-riding theme through all the therapy that I outline:


Our human bodies all have an inbuilt desire, a compass that always points the body toward doing everything possible to heal itself naturally. But in Western society we have become accustomed to moving in unusual ways to fit in with the latest fashion, or to copy other influential people such as parents or friends or unsuitable role models.


If you look carefully aroung you, you will even see human bodies that have begun to adapt to the way that manufacturers decide to build furniture that they have been forced to use in their everyday lives. Look at the curved thoracic posture of long term IT Workers, rounded tense shoulders and as a result necks and heads forced forwards.


As babies learn to stand we can see that the body, the neck and the head all adopt a perfect alignment, the youngsters move about gracefully and with great agility and mobility.


Unfortunately as we know this doesn’t last and the children begin to copy the crooked bent postures of adults, the slumped posture of depressed teenagers, and eventually start to become the next generation of overly stressed and tense Western adults.
