Stress, Tension, Fibromyalgia and Fatigue.

Applying the Alexander Technique.

how to beat fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome

Increased Fibromyalgia pain results in broken sleep patterns and so worsening of Chronic Fatigue. A real vicious circle. Where does the Alexander technique come in. Lets start with the commonly recognized sequence of events:-

 1.    We know that stress causes anxiety in all animals.

2.    Anxiety results in the endocrine system producing excess levels of adrenaline and cortisol.

3.    Continued high levels of adrenaline and cortisol have been scientifically proven to result in ulcers, high blood pressure and tension headaches. These are known short terms effects. Longer term effects can be even more severe.

Alexander's approach tries to address the holistic totality of the body. We already know that we can apply conscious control over thought processes such as anxiety and tension. The Alexander technique is about applying these same conscious thought processes to using the skeletal muscles.  And if we are able to do this so we can begin to improve and regain overall good health.

We do not need to assimilate the entirety of Alexanders great works only that which is specifically relevant to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. We need to examine Alexanders approach to musculoskeletal pain.

Alexander looks at the body as an entire functional entity. His approach is holistic. For example, to solve a problem that manifests in one specific area of the back Alexander proposes that this cannot be healed without addressing the whole back and how it is used as a fully-integrated unit.

The art is in being aware of and able to control our entire supporting musculature. Alexander’s teachings allow people to understand and work with gravity rather than trying to work against it. This will become an important aspect for all back pain sufferers who strive to overcome their symptoms.

Practice doing less with the body:

This is an important concept in Alexanders work. And by this we don’t just mean becoming generally lazier. What Alexander meant was to identify and remove unrequired muscle tension and habits that result in poor posture and can be the real genuine cause of serious back pain.

For Fibromyalgia sufferers this can be a serious effect. The tension cycle can maintain and worsen their specific Fibromyalgia trigger points.

Pain often results in degrading sleep patterns, which means less time in deep healing sleep, more tension overall the next day and so a more severe experience of pain, and so the cycle continues.

As a Fibromyalgia sufferer if you can intervene in the pain cycle and prevent or short circuit the terrible attacks of Fibromyalgia pain, you can learn to avoid dependence on muscle relaxants and painkillers which over time become less effective and can have their own nasty side effects.

Also once the cycle is broken less energy can be expended on coping with pain.

Society has made remarkable medical and scientific advances over the last few hundred years, but there are still many serious diseases that continue to baffle doctors and scientists. There is no silver bullet for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and recent experiences related to XMRV show that there probably never will be. However, the techniques I present work powerfully together to address the underlying causes of these diseases, which results in a sustainable deep healing process.
